Introduction: Implementation of tooth caries prevention protocols for primary school students are a part of Iran's national programs. So evaluation and improvement of parent's knowledge about these methods is mandatory.  To The aim of the present study is to evaluate knowledge level of 7-10 years old children's mothers about tooth caries prevention in Zanjan in 2013-2014.

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study was carried out on 281 children 7-10 years-old that randomly selected from two city areas. General information and knowledge level of mothers was evaluated by a questionnaire. The results were statistically analyzed using Chi-Square test.

Results: knowledge level of mothers about frequency of tooth brushing was 76.2%, using fluoride mouth rinses (67.3%), dental floss (77/9%), less sugar intake (90%), fluoride of drinking water (66.2%), fissure sealant (31.3%), xylitol chewing gum (55.2%). Differences between mother's knowledge level, educational position and living area were considerable. (p<0.005)

Conclusion: Mother's knowledge level about methods of using fluoride and fissure sealant was low. Parents should be encouraged to frequent dental visits and dentists should provide necessary information. Schools have an important role in improvement of parent’s knowledge level.
